About The Position

The Assistant Sports Editor is a position meant to help the news editor in the curation of content for The Sagebrush's sports section in any given week. Applicants should be experienced with sports writing and have a passion for collegiate athletics, especially at the University of Nevada, Reno, be willing to work on a team, and be comfortable working under deadline pressure. Applicants should also have a basic understanding of media ethics and media law, especially as they pertain to reporting on a college campus. All applicants must submit 3-5 clips with their application. Clips can be work samples, 1000 words or less, or any other medium which shows the applicant’s talents. Essays will not be accepted.

Requirements

• Be a student of the University of Nevada, Reno.
• Maintain a 2.00 GPA and be enrolled in at least 12 credits unless a graduating senior.
• Have strong leadership and good news-judgment,
• Must have experience with AP style and writing for print or online
• Have experience writing headlines
• Have a strong voice within articles and work well under deadline.
• Should be familiar with current Sagebrush work (articles, multimedia, social media)
• Should have experience with social media and Word Press

Responsibilities

• Assist in writing and editing content for the sports section
• Attend weekly staff meetings
• Ensure all content is posted to the Nevada Sagebrush website and Instagram in a timely manner.
• Complete a weekly check-in worksheet
• Attend monthly meetings with Student Media advisor
