The Student Train Operator position at the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) is a part-time role focused on operating Light Rail Vehicle (LRV) trains in both revenue and non-revenue service.   • Operate Light Rail Vehicle (LRV) trains in revenue and non-revenue service.
  • Perform pre-departure checkouts and make public address announcements.
  • Monitor and report passenger movements and exercise prudent judgment during onboard vehicle failures.
  • Prepare vehicle defect reports and assist in providing on-the-job instruction to student personnel.
  • Perform yard switching activities and operate trains into and out of shop buildings for repairs.
  • Prepare detailed reports pertaining to unusual events and provide superficial first aid as needed.
  • Must be 21 years of age or older.
  • Valid California driver's license with a minimum of three years of satisfactory driving experience.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn MTS policies and regulations.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task.
  • Bilingual skills are preferred and encouraged.
