About The Position

The Kirstein Business Library & Innovation Center (KBLIC) at the Boston Public Library is seeking a creative and motivated work-study student to teach introductory workshops on Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) and sound editing. This role is ideal for a student with a background in music production, audio engineering, or media arts who enjoys sharing their skills with the community. The student teacher will design and lead engaging beginner-level sessions that help patrons understand the basics of audio recording, editing, and production using software such as Audacity, GarageBand, or Pro Tools. This is a Community Service Employment role. Community Service Employment (CSE) provides Berklee students with community-based jobs, through which they gain professional experience, educational enrichment, and the opportunity to share their skills and participate in the development of Boston’s multicultural communities. Community Service Employment roles require federal work-study eligibility and U.S. domestic status. What is federal work-study (FWS)? It’s available to undergraduate, graduate, and professional students with financial need from their financial aid award to provide part-time employment when you’re enrolled in school. Requirements

  • Federal Work-Study eligible
  • Strong knowledge of at least one DAW (e.g., GarageBand, Logic Pro, Pro Tools, Ableton, Audacity, FL Studio).
  • Basic understanding of audio editing, mixing, and exporting.
  • Excellent communication and teaching skills, especially with beginners.
  • Dependable, organized, and comfortable working independently.
  • Interest in public education, music technology, or digital media literacy.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience teaching, tutoring, or mentoring others in a creative or technical setting.
  • Familiarity with podcasting or sound design.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and teach 60–90 minute classes introducing patrons to DAWs and basic sound editing concepts.
  • Monthly Tech Help Appointments (TBD)
  • Develop simple lesson plans, slides, and/or handouts for each class with Adult Technology Coordinator
  • Demonstrate use of audio interfaces, microphones, and software tools.
  • Ensure all class activities are accessible to beginners with varying levels of technical ability.
  • Maintain a welcoming, patient, and inclusive learning environment.
