About The Position

The Student Support Specialist at Spokane Virtual Learning plays a crucial role in enhancing student academic achievement and fostering positive behavior improvements. This part-time position involves working closely with teachers and students in both in-person and online settings, focusing on building relationships with students and their families to support their academic and social needs. The specialist will also engage with community resources to improve student attendance and performance, ultimately aiming to increase graduation rates for targeted student groups.

Requirements

• GED or high school diploma; some college preferred.
• Demonstrated ability and aptitude to perform the responsibilities listed.
• Demonstrated ability and proficiency to speak, write, comprehend, and translate both English and identified language.
• Demonstrated ability to interact positively and professionally with a diverse group of students, parents, staff, and community members in a confidential manner.
• Ability to relate positively to youth and adults of varying socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic backgrounds, learning styles, and special needs.
• Demonstrated knowledge of culturally responsive programs and activities.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and clearly in both written and oral form.
• Experience with computers and software such as Windows, Microsoft Office, and/or publishing software.

Responsibilities

• Request data from the attendance office to identify students with patterns of absenteeism or tardiness.
• Identify, connect, and build relationships of trust with the student and family community.
• Attend and participate in community events for students and families.
• Connect with District staff to identify strategies to reduce tardiness and improve academic performance for identified students.
• Intervene with strategies to reduce tardiness and improve academic performance for identified students.
• Work with teachers to understand the student's needs.
• Coordinate with counselor and other school specialists to find appropriate services to meet the identified needs.
• Connect students and families to District staff to coordinate resources provided to the school site and community.
• Connect parents to resources for developing skills to support the social/academic needs of students.
• Develop positive relationships with families, District staff, and community organizations to provide academic and social supports for students.
• Attend and network with families during parent connection efforts, such as Open House, student-led conferences, parent workshops, and community events.
• Gain knowledge of the College Bound Scholarship program and support students through the enrollment process.
• Gather information about the impact of interventions and make adjustments when necessary.
• Willingness to work before or after school hours, when necessary.
