The LEARN Charter School Network is a network of college preparatory elementary schools dedicated to providing our students with the solid academic foundation and ambition to earn a college degree. Our college preparatory elementary schools provide a rigorous educational program that is built upon an intimate understanding of each student’s individual learning style and academic needs. We are guided by five principles which include: expectations of high achievement; mutual respect; the development of a safe and nurturing environment; active family participation; and the positive development of the whole child. The Student Supports Coordinator is responsible for the leadership, administration, and supervision in Washington, D.C. of special education and student support services.

  • Coordinate special education services for all Students with Disabilities and/or students who are English Language Learners (EL) and ensure that learning plans are aligned with the LEARN Network’s core curriculum/guidelines and any locally required OSSE guidelines and policies.
  • Lead administration of social and emotional learning (SEL) aligned to LEARN Network standards and any future OSSE standards for SEL with the Support of the Network Sr. Director of Student Support.
  • Ensure that the school has put into place an effective Multi-Tier Support System (MTSS) to provide tiers of support appropriate for individual scholars.
  • Monitor achievement testing and achievement for students with disabilities and EL students.
  • Serve as the liaison between LEARN DC and the Network SSS team; maintain ongoing communication and share successes, changes in practices related to legislation changes, and/or any concerns
  • Along with the LEARN DC Principal, select, supervise, coach, and coordinate services provided by the Special Education Team – includes: special education teachers, social workers, and related clinicians. Establish with support of Network HR and Student Supports Team vendor relations and outsourced staff.
  • With LEARN CMO Director of Student Services and LEARN DC Principal, plan and deliver staff professional development training.
  • Supervise the writing of appropriate IEP/504 plans; oversee diverse learning progress monitoring and execution of (IEPs).
  • Collaborate with school leaders regarding the discipline of students with disabilities.
  • Review and navigate the compliance and implementation of IEP/504 plans
  • Ensure that all Bilingual and Special Education procedures are compliant with federal, state and Network legislation, timelines and process requirements.
  • Ensure the school is abreast and has consistent practices with new legislation or changes in legislation related to special Education, Bilingual Education, Differentiation and Discipline (i.e. PRTO)
  • Serve as a liaison to facilitate the relationship between LEARN D.C. and the Special Education Department of Local Education Agency; participate in all matters of dispute resolution pertaining to students with disabilities with the support of the Network Sr. Director of Student Support; manage mediation and due process procedures, conduct MDRs, etc.
  • Coordinate the implementation and progress monitoring of related grants.
  • Ensures that the campus is compliant with local district ELL rules and regulations and programming requirements.
  • Maintains communication with OSSE and PCSB about any changes in laws.

  • Valid Special Education Teacher certification; must be Highly Qualified according to state/district regulations
  • 5 years of teaching experience in special education required
  • Demonstrated track record of delivering gains in student academic achievement
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with children, families, professionals and other personnel from a wide range of cultural, social and economic backgrounds
  • Ability to analyze and disaggregate student academic data to determine strengths and weaknesses for program design and instructional decision making
  • Interpersonal, problem solving and organizational skills required to effectively lead program implementation and facilitate staff development
