Requirements

• Enrolled in an accredited registered nursing program with completion of nursing fundamentals course.
• Student must be in good academic standing.
• Current BCLS (ARC or AHA) certificate upon hire and maintain current.
• Certified Nursing Assistant or Emergency Medical Technician preferred.

Responsibilities

• The Student Extern is an adjunct to the patient care team.
• The extern performs at the level that has successfully been completed and passed in the clinical section at a local college.
• Under the general supervision of an RN, the extern provides direct patient care in accordance with the established protocols.
• The skills they are able to perform are expanded.
• All newly hired externs will first function in the capacity of a nursing assistant, regardless of their nursing program clinical level.
• When the student has been cleared by the Supervisor, they may be moved to their appropriate skill level.
