About The Position

Student position encompasses approximately eight weeks of paid training. Training will be conducted at the shipyard and will include classroom and hands-on activities. Training program includes the following courses: Ship terminology, blueprint, performing layout, basic machines, hand tools, power tools, precision measuring, thread fasteners, drilling, threading and tapping holes, lock wire lock tabs, pump alignment, and many more. Upon completing training, there will be four steps of trainee progression that must be completed prior to promoting to the journeyman position. Progression at each level requires acquiring production experience and completing technical trade courses.

Requirements

Must show at least two years of continuous, stable and verifiable employment, and/or training.
Must have the ability to understand verbal and written instructions
Must be able to communicate effectively in English.
Must be mechanically inclined to disassemble and reassemble mechanical parts.
High school education/equivalent preferred.
Excellent eye hand coordination.
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. frequently.
Ability to climb ladders.
Able to work in confined spaces.
Ability to work independently with little supervision.
Must have problem solving skills.
Must have a good understanding of math and measurements.
Must have 20/20 OR correctable vision and color vision.
Must be able to demonstrate flexibility and versatility with respect to work tasks
Must possess observation skills, ability to respond quickly, good judgment and on-going safety awareness
Frequent carrying, pushing, pulling, standing, manual dexterity, reaching, seeing, hearing, occasional kneeling, reclining and finger dexterity.
Must be able to work all shifts and at heights.
Construction or manufacturing background preferred and have strong mechanical skills.
Desire a career in shipbuilding.
Work hard and motivated
Works well in teams.
Enjoys working with hand tools, power tools, and large machinery.
Are interested with participating in a training program to learn technical trade skills.
Desires continual learning and improvement in a competitive work environment.
Works safely and produces first-time quality.

Nice To Haves

Knowledge of Navy and Commercial construction standards is desirable.
Prior vocational/trade training desired (e.g., welding, auto mechanic, diesel mechanic, construction)

Responsibilities

Possess the ability to learn how to read and interpret mechanical drawings, written instructions and technical manuals.
Possess the ability to learn how to read and comprehend hydraulic and pneumatic diagrams.
Capable of learning how to assemble and install complex mechanical systems, while meeting alignment criteria of systems and equipment.
Capable of learning how to use precision measurement tools.
Possess the ability to learn Imperial and Metric measuring systems.
Capable of learning shop mathematic skills, with understanding of geometry, trigonometry, and work with decimals and fractions.
Capable of maintaining constant safety awareness.
Possess the ability to learn safe use of hand and power tools as well as portable machining tools.
Capable of learning other job duties that are relevant to the trade.
