The Student Opportunities in Applied Research (SOAR) summer internship program is designed to enhance the awareness, readiness, fellowship, mentorship, and sponsorship of enterprising students for successful and significant careers in national security, defense, and aerospace organizations, including the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL). This 10-week internship program runs from May to August and is paid, providing housing, a meal plan, and travel reimbursement to and from the internship location. Interns are expected to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer, with pay rates dependent on the position and the total number of credits completed. The program aims to create opportunities for and enhance the participation of all students, particularly under-represented students in STEM-related career fields and those who were not previously affiliated with Penn State University. Interns can apply for one of three locations: Research and Development Office Internship in Reston, VA, Research and Development Office Internship in University Park, PA, or Enterprise Operations Internship in University Park, PA. Each internship location offers unique opportunities tailored to specific fields of study. For instance, the Research and Development Office internships at Reston, VA, are particularly suited for undergraduate students in engineering majors such as Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Data Science/Analysis, Electrical Engineering, Information Science and Technology, and Software Engineering. Interns in these roles will engage in developing quality software and algorithmic solutions, working within an agile environment, and utilizing technologies such as Java, Python, and machine learning frameworks. The internships at University Park, PA, are open to undergraduate students and recent graduates from various majors, with a strong encouragement for those in Acoustics, Data Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Materials Science, Oceanography, Optics, and Physics. Interns will actively contribute to research projects in areas like Additive Manufacturing, Unmanned Autonomous Vehicles, and Big Data Analysis. The Enterprise Operations internships also welcome students from all majors, focusing on business services, engineering services, human resources, security services, information technology, and corporate communications. Candidates selected for these positions may be subject to a government security investigation and must successfully complete a pre-employment drug screen. U.S. citizenship is a requirement for all applicants.
