About The Position

The Student Nurse Tech position provides general clerical, equipment, and patient care support to patient care units. Driscoll Children’s Hospital and its specialty centers, urgent care centers, and after-hours facility serve a vast area covering 31 South Texas counties. Requirements

  • Student Nurse currently enrolled in a Registered Nurse Program
  • American Heart Association – Basic Life Support (BLS) obtained prior to hire and maintained continuously thereafter
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NCI) within 6 months of hire and maintained continuously thereafter
  • Completed applications must include a resume
  • Most recent unofficial transcript
  • BLS

Responsibilities

  • Maintain utmost level of confidentiality at all times
  • Adhere to hospital policies and procedures
  • Demonstrate personal actions that are ethical and adhere to corporate compliance and integrity guidelines
  • Respond to communication devices such as phone/vocera/call bells
  • Complete basic entries into the electronic medical record
  • Record patient data in EMR
  • Transcribe written orders
  • Stock supply
  • Check for expiration dates
  • Order supply
  • Clean equipment
  • Clean toys
  • Transport blood borne pathogen or other patient specimens
  • Pick up blood from blood bank and deliver to the unit
  • Spray surgical instruments with enzymatic cleanser and prepare/transport them for processing
  • Package or move infectious waste containers for disposal
  • Provide in rooms support for patients on airborne precautions
  • Measure, record and empty urine collection devices
  • Empty bedpans/commodes
  • Reinforce established education material or room orientation with patients/families
  • Transport patients (no IV or Oxygen) off unit for tests/procedures
  • Discontinue Peripheral IV’s
  • Obtain Point of Care specimens and urine, wound, stool throat and nasal specimens
  • Perform room safety check for patients at risk for self-harm or harm to others
  • Perform non-clinical patient assistant in addition can perform 1:1 supervision for at risk patients including patients in restraints (not hard restraints)
  • Perform basic data collection and documentation
