About The Position

The Student Nurse in the NICU at the University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center is responsible for providing direct patient care under the supervision of a registered nurse. This role involves participating in the nursing process, assisting with various nursing tasks, and ensuring patient safety while contributing to a supportive team environment.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Currently enrolled in an accredited pre-licensure MSN, BSN, or ADN program with good academic standing.
• Passing grade in Fundamentals/Foundations of Nursing required.
• Current BLS card (AHA or American Red Cross) required.
• Previous experience preferred.

• Knowledge of universal blood and body fluid precautions and aseptic technique.
• Effective communication and interpersonal relationship skills.

Responsibilities

• Assist the registered nurse with patient assessment by monitoring parameters as outlined by the nurse.
• Provide input to the nursing care plan based on observations of previous treatments or care.
• Perform delegated nursing care activities such as nasogastric irrigations and feedings.
• Assist with urinary catheterization and perform catheter care and removal.
• Conduct routine procedures such as dressing changes and calculating intake and output.
• Provide direct patient care including personal hygiene, positioning, ambulating, and feeding.
• Assist with patient admissions and discharges, and set up special equipment as needed.
• Care for medical devices such as braces and compression wraps.
• Report patient responses to nursing actions, including pain management and vital signs.
• Document vital signs and intake/output in accordance with nursing policies.
• Perform CPR as needed and follow infection control guidelines.
• Communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
