About The Position

The Student Nurse Externship at Hackensack Meridian Health is a 10-week program designed for nursing students to gain practical experience while earning a stipend. Under the guidance of a registered nurse, externs will practice essential nursing skills and provide direct patient care in various healthcare settings across multiple locations in New Jersey. This program aims to enhance the students' confidence and competence in a clinical environment, preparing them for their future nursing careers.

Requirements

• Currently matriculated in a Board of Nursing approved BSN program or an HMH affiliated Associate Degree program.
• High school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) required.
• Grade Point Average of 3.0 or higher strongly preferred.
• Ability to work varied days and hours.
• American Heart Association BLS certification required.

Responsibilities

• Provides direct patient care under the direction of the RN professional to all assigned patients.
• Maintains a safe patient area and assumes responsibility for patient care as a team member.
• Performs assigned components of assessment focusing on physiologic, psychosocial, and cognitive status.
• Conducts data collection and documentation of intake and output, vital signs, weights, and reports significant changes.
• Provides hygienic care, positions patients, and assists with pre/post-operative care and ambulation.
• Ensures a safe patient environment by responding promptly to call lights and communicating changes in patient condition to the RN.
• Identifies and modifies care based on the specific needs of the patient population served, including age and cultural considerations.
• Adheres to the standards identified in the Medical Center's Organizational Competencies.
