About The Position

The nurse extern assists patients/nurses with assessments and those procedural tasks that the student has obtained competency validation in his/her respective nursing program. Assist in activities of daily living to all patients and assist in maintaining a safe and clean environment under the direction supervision of the RN assigned to the nurse extern. Application deadline is April 24th.

Requirements

  • Must be enrolled in an accredited RN/LPN program.
  • Must provide documentation of competency validation for nursing skills (IV insertion; indwelling urinary catheter insertion and maintenance; nasogastric tube insertion; among others).
  • Must be able to read, write and communicate in English.
  • Must have the ability to follow written and verbal directions.
  • CPR certification
  • Prolonged, extensive, or considerable standing and walking.
  • Required to climb, balance, stoop, and kneel.
  • Required to use arms, hands, and fingers for repetitive grasping, pulling, and pushing and feeling.
  • Required to use stethoscope to auscultate heart, lung and bowel sounds.
  • Frequently lift and/or move up to 25 lbs and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, any workload exceeding 50 pounds will require assistance.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for obtaining report from the supervising RN, reviewing the electronic medical record for those patients under his/her care.
  • Responsible for providing documentation of competency validation for nursing skills from his/her current nursing program.
  • Perform only those skills in which competency was achieved and only under the direct supervision of the supervising RN.
  • Supports and promotes an environment conducive with the Mission, Vision, and Values of the hospital as well as the Standards of Behavior.
  • Assists patients in a manner conducive to the patient’s comfort, safety, and care plan.
  • Document care provided in electronic medical record.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all patients, hospital, or physician-related information.
  • Is knowledgeable of general hospital policies and procedures.
  • Ability to work well with a diverse work team.
  • Ability to work under pressure with time constraints.
  • Ability to concentrate.
  • Good mental health and emotional maturity.
  • Good personal grooming and hygiene.
  • Recognizes and respects the individual emotional, social, and cultural needs of patients, including their religious beliefs.
  • Always preserves the dignity and respect of all patients.
  • Displays knowledge of sterile and non-sterile supplies, equipment, and procedures.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and practices Universal Precautions and other Infection Control Policies and procedures.
  • Willingness to perform a variety of minimal repetitive tasks that may involve unpleasant conditions and maintain patience and tact.
  • Possession of a genuine interest and concern for geriatric and disabled persons.
  • Completes assigned duties.
  • Openly asks clarification questions to learn new information to assist in nurse extern development.
  • Follows expected work practices.
  • Displays thoroughness and accuracy of work.
  • Works in a safe manner, including reporting unsafe equipment or environment.
  • Develops well-organized skills, accepts assignments willingly and accomplishes them timely and appropriately, as a nurse extern.
  • Maintain knowledge and skills necessary to communicate and interact with patients, visitors, and staff in the following age groups: Infant, Pediatric/adolescent, Adult, and Geriatric.
