About The Position

The Student Nurse Extern position at Regional One Health is designed for nursing students to assist nursing staff in providing patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. This role involves performing various nursing tasks, maintaining patient records, and ensuring the comfort and safety of patients while adhering to established policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Must be enrolled in an approved nursing program (diploma, associate, or bachelor degree in nursing) and have completed fundamentals of nursing.
  • Must provide proof of continuous enrollment in an approved nursing program to maintain employment.
  • Required certifications include Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Basic Life Support (BCLS).
  • Experience in patient care or equivalent on-the-job training as obtained through participation in an approved nursing program.

Responsibilities

  • Participates and performs selected activities and nursing care as assigned according to established policies and procedures.
  • Assists in developing and revisiting Nursing Care Plans.
  • Performs clerical duties related to admissions, discharges, and maintenance of patient and unit records.
  • Takes and records patient vital signs including temperature, pulse, blood pressure, and respiration.
  • Collects, prepares, forwards, and transports specimens such as urine, stool, and sputum.
  • Delivers activities of living such as hygiene, nutrition, elimination, and progressive activity.
  • Maintains records of fluid intake and output.
  • Provides measures of comfort and convenience to patients.
  • Observes and reports patient's response to interventions/treatment.
  • Completes all documentation requirements in a timely manner.
  • Provides one-on-one observation for patients requiring close monitoring.
  • Communicates unit activities, needs, and problems to appropriate staff regarding patient care.
  • Prepares patient, environment, and supplies for care/treatment.
  • Works within isolation precautions and performs pre/post procedural care as delegated.
  • Assists with wound care and applying dressings and bandages.
  • Assists with transferring, ambulating, and transportation of patients.
  • Reports and records all activities performed along with the patients' responses.
  • Responds appropriately to emergency situations and reports unusual changes in patients' conditions.
