The Student Nurse Extern (SNE) Progression Program helps student nurses on their pathway to becoming an RN while gaining hands-on patient care experience. Good Samaritan provides these future nurses with learning, mentorship, and progression opportunities as they work toward their degree. In this role, you’ll work alongside other healthcare professionals to strengthen your skills in patient care, decision-making, and critical thinking. The Student Nurse Extern 1 (SNE 1) works under the direction of the registered nurse (RN) as a non-licensed team member. As a non-licensed team member, the SNE 1 provides care to designated patients and supports the patient care team. Job duties include provision of activities of daily living, mobility assistance, continuous observation including suicide prevention, and ensuring the patient's surroundings are clean and orderly. The Student Nurse Extern 2 and 3 work under the direction of the registered nurse (RN) building on your skills as a SNE 1. As a SNE 2 or 3 you will grow your nursing skills by honing your assessment skills of your patients mental, physical, and spiritual needs. The SNE3 position is for pre-licensure RN students in their final year of nursing education. Job Duties include all those listed under SNE 1 with the addition of providing education, advocating, and implementing the nursing process of assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating each patients’ unique needs under the direct supervision of the nurse preceptor. Our advanced SNE’s also work on IV and Foley insertion skills, dressing changes, medication administration, and developing critical thinking skills necessary to recognize, act on, and report changes in the patient condition. SNE2 and 3 work tech and SNE assignments in their respective home departments. Candidate specific department of interest will be discussed during scheduled interview.

Requirements

  • Prior experience in a hospital or healthcare environment not required.
  • High School Diploma / GED
  • SNE 2 requirement + one year from graduation from registered nursing education program. Must provide proof of nursing program skills and continued enrollment in nursing program. Minimum 2.7 combined (nursing and other college courses) GPA required.
  • BLS
  • Complete one week of full-time training.

Responsibilities

  • Establishes a compassionate environment to provide emotional, psychological, and spiritual support to patients and families.

  • Maintains emotional control while assisting patients, families, situations and other healthcare professionals.
  • Perform basic patient care needs such as bathing, feeding, vitals, activities of daily living, transportation of patients, discontinue IV, Accucheck, and catheter care.
  • Documents completely, timely, and accurately in the medical record.
  • Demonstrates the ability to prioritize, organize, and multitask with varied interruptions and noise levels.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or requested.
