About The Position

The Student Nurse Extern I position at UNC Health is designed for nursing students enrolled in an accredited nursing program, providing them with an immersive clinical experience. Requirements

• Current enrollment in an accredited prelicensure nursing program with anticipated graduation within 12 months.
• High School Diploma or GED.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Fluent in verbal and written English language.
• Basic computer skills.
• Ability to organize and prioritize assignments in patient care delivery.

• Experience in home health care or similar settings.

Responsibilities

• Observes, collects, and documents patient information while providing care, reporting significant changes to a registered nurse or provider.
• Participates in identifying and reporting patient safety issues collaboratively.
• Assists patients and families during admission, orientation, and discharge processes.
• Provides care and treatments as outlined in the plan of care, including vital signs measurement, specimen collection, and catheter care.
• Delivers direct personal care for daily living activities such as bathing, dressing, and feeding.
• Performs indirect care tasks including cleaning, re-stocking supplies, and transporting patients.
• Reinforces routine teaching provided by registered nurses and documents patient understanding.
• Assists healthcare providers during examinations and emergency situations.
