About The Position

The Student Nurse Associate position in the Step-down Unit at Parkwest is a PRN/OCC role with variable hours and shifts. Parkwest, part of Covenant Health, is a leading medical facility in West Knoxville, recognized for its exceptional cardiac services and overall patient care. The Step-down Unit caters to patients requiring increased monitoring due to higher acuity conditions, providing a supportive environment with a focus on teamwork and patient-centered care. The unit employs a modified six-week self-scheduling model with an every other weekend requirement, making it an ideal place for those seeking a dynamic and engaging work atmosphere.

Requirements

  • Student in an accredited nursing education program.
  • Must have junior or senior year status.
  • Must have successfully completed the fundamental clinical skills portion of the program or complete it within the same semester of hiring.
  • CPR certification required.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates competence in performing critical skills according to age-specific needs.
  • Takes and records vital signs including temperature, pulse, respiration rates, blood pressure, weight, height, and intake-output measurements.
  • Employs established infection control policies and safety measures.
  • Completes designated patient care activities and ensures patient comfort and privacy.
  • Identifies and assists patients needing help with nutrition and hydration.
  • Manages and records intake and output from drains, canisters, urine bags, bedpans, and emesis basins.
  • Maintains a clean and orderly patient and work environment.
  • Revises and updates the plan of care in collaboration with RN.
  • Assists RN in obtaining thorough nursing histories on assigned patients.
  • Demonstrates effective therapeutic communication skills.
  • Documents and maintains patient records accurately.
  • Performs basic dressing changes and understands sterile technique fundamentals.
  • Evaluates nursing care actions and patient responses, documenting each shift.
  • Observes and responds to changes in patient conditions, reporting significant changes to RN.
  • Documents treatments and diagnostic tests with results and responses.
  • Observes post-treatment/operative patients and initiates appropriate nursing actions.
  • Obtains RN signature for review and co-signature of all entries.
  • Completes assigned tasks with minimal supervision, seeking guidance when necessary.
  • Communicates suggestions and complaints through appropriate channels.
  • Demonstrates ability to perform effectively under stress.
  • Follows policies, procedures, and safety standards, completing required education assignments.
  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives as requested.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
