About The Position

The Student Nurse Associate in the Emergency Department at Cumberland Medical Center is a PRN/OCC position with varying hours and shifts. The position involves performing a variety of patient care activities and supportive services under the supervision of a registered nurse.

Requirements

  • Student in an accredited nursing education program.
  • Must have junior or senior year status and have completed the fundamental clinical skills portion of the program or complete the program within the same semester of hiring.
  • No prior experience required, but previous hospital experience preferred.
  • Must be able to operate a computer and possess excellent interpersonal skills.
  • CPR certification required.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates competence in performing critical skills according to age-specific needs of the population served.
  • Takes and records vital signs including temperature, pulse, respiration rates, blood pressure, weight, height, and intake-output measurements.
  • Employs established infection control policies including standard precautions and safety measures.
  • Completes designated patient care activities and provides for patient comfort and privacy.
  • Identifies and assists patients needing help with nutrition and hydration.
  • Empties drains, canisters, urine bags, bedpans, and emesis basins, and records intake and output.
  • Helps maintain a clean and orderly patient and work environment.
  • Revises and updates the plan of care in collaboration with the RN.
  • Assists RN in obtaining a thorough nursing history on assigned patients.
  • Demonstrates effective therapeutic communication skills.
  • Documents and maintains patient records appropriately.
  • Performs basic dressing changes and understands sterile technique fundamentals.
  • Evaluates nursing care actions and patient responses, documenting each shift.
  • Observes and responds to changes in patient conditions, reporting significant changes to the RN.
  • Documents treatments and diagnostic tests with results and responses clearly and accurately.
  • Observes post-treatment/operative patients and initiates appropriate nursing actions.
  • Obtains RN signature for review and co-signature of all entries.
  • Completes assigned tasks with minimal supervision, seeking guidance when necessary.
  • Communicates suggestions and complaints through appropriate channels.
  • Demonstrates ability to perform effectively under stress.
  • Follows policies, procedures, and safety standards, completing required education assignments annually.
  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives as requested.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
