About The Position

The Upward Bound Tutor-Mentor (TM) will work for six weeks during the summer program, from June 1–July 17, 2026, with high school students from Hamilton High School participating in Miami University Hamilton’s Upward Bound program. The program includes academic, cultural, and recreational activities and is based on the Miami University Hamilton campus. Tutor-Mentors support academic excellence, mentor students in their college pathways, and help foster a strong sense of community and belonging. Standard work hours are Monday–Thursday, 8:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m., with occasional extended, overnight, and/or weekend responsibilities. Training may occur in early May. This is a temporary position, and multiple Tutor-Mentors will be hired. Limited opportunities to continue working during the 2026–27 school year may be available.

Requirements

  • Rising college sophomores, juniors, seniors, or graduates (by the beginning of the summer program) in good academic standing and a desire to work with high-school students.
  • All Tutor-Mentors must be available from June 1st - July 17th.
  • Minimum 2.80 GPA
  • At least 30 hours of earned college credit
  • At least one full academic year as a full-time college student

Nice To Haves

  • Experience leading small groups, tutoring, mentoring, or working with high school-aged youth
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Prior experience with conflict resolution (i.e. in a job, student organization, volunteer project)
  • Reliable, with excellent attendance habits
  • Detail-oriented
  • Courteous, welcoming demeanor and dedication to assist students, parents, faculty, and staff
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Excellent customer service skills

Responsibilities

  • Mentor groups of <20 students, including planning and facilitating workshops and events.
  • Communicate with Upward Bound staff regarding students’ progress and well-being.
  • Facilitate student learning by helping them develop strong study skills.
  • Advise students on how to set goals to benefit their overall academic success.
  • Guide students to developing critical thinking skills and independently solve problems.
  • Refer students to the proper campus resources when necessary.
  • Serve as a role model and maintain strong professional boundaries with students.
  • Promote a community of mutual trust and respect
  • Use of basic office software (Google Docs, Microsoft Word, etc) and tasks such as making copies.
  • Other duties as needed
