About The Position

ROCKHURST UNIVERSITY OFFICE OF MULTICULUTURAL BELONGING AND ENGAGEMENT 2022-2023 STUDENT LEADER JOB DESCRIPTION ROLE OF THE STUDENT LEADER: This dynamic role promotes and enhances the academic success of students through an early move-in program and mentoring. The early move-in program will take place from August 16-18, 2022 and is a summer residential program for incoming freshman. The student leaders will mentor and guide students through sessions covering issues including: Finding friends and making campus connections Finding jobs on campus Understanding scholarships, grants, and loans How to succeed in classes Using the portal: how and why? Service learning Preparing a graduation plan Managing money Student Leaders will also serve as peer mentors, within the Office of Multicultural Belonging and Engagement throughout the 2022-2023 academic year. Student leaders will support students academic and social development by connecting students with resources and programs to enhance student learning. This allows students to combine the tutelage from both Academic Advisors and Student Leaders in order to establish a foundation for a successful college career. Mission : Student leaders are a part of an integrated effort to create an outstanding university experience for all students at RU with a focus on supporting multicultural learning and fostering belonging and engagement. Student Leaders will aid in providing new students with a transition to college life and multicultural learning in four important ways: Raise academic expectations with engagement and compassion through programming Serving as a resource to connect students with programs and initiatives that enhance learning and success Partnering with OMBE staff to foster campus community and feelings of inclusion at RU Offer opportunities for academic and personal development

Requirements

  • Must be a full-time student in good standing as defined by RU
  • Must be classified as a sophomore or higher by hours and years of attendance by the fall of 2022
  • Required to maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 at time of application and throughout term of employment
  • Ability to communicate well, verbally and non-verbally
  • Strong ability to present to various groups of individuals
  • If hired, must be able to provide proof of identity and employment eligibility
  • Possess a positive attitude and passion for helping others
  • Able to help students identify barriers to academic, social, and personal success
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills including: face-to-face communication, email etiquette, and referral to on campus resources
  • Ability to encourage, build relationships, and motivate others
  • Understanding and support of the goals and philosophies of the OMBE
  • Ability to work in a team and to be flexible
  • Ability to multi-task while providing exceptional service
  • Ability to relate well with students, faculty, and administrators
  • Demonstration of responsibility, positive attitude, confidence, flexibility, team orientation, strong interpersonal skills, and high energy

Responsibilities

  • Participate in mandatory training/ retreat during the summer
  • Mentor and guide students through sessions during early move-in program
  • Assist in success workshops
  • Implement a coaching model that will address all issues inside and outside the classroom
  • Assess students current practices and suggest ways to improve
  • Serve as role models, support, and give the student a sense of belonging
  • Provide one-on-one sessions, reflection, and hold students accountable
  • Help students achieve meaningful and measurable goals
  • Provide individualized plans specific to academic and personal goals
  • Connect students to faculty, staff, and/or departments
  • Be a resource for students to communicate problems when faced with challenging situations
  • Maintain notes and/or other required documents
  • Help students become familiar with university resources; advise and refer students to appropriate university resources as needed
  • Maintain an academic relationship log of conversations with students
