About The Position

ISO New England is the independent system operator responsible for ensuring the safe and reliable flow of electricity in our region and planning for the future of the electric grid. We are at the forefront of New England’s ongoing transition to clean energy. The internship title is IBR Oscillation Modeling and Simulation within the Advanced Technology Solutions department. The intern will model, simulate, and analyze inverter-based resources (IBRs) to understand grid oscillations and improve system stability. This role offers hands-on experience with real-world power systems and advanced solution tools, making a tangible impact on the future of the electric grid.

Requirements

  • Solid understanding of inverter-based resources (IBR) and power system dynamics.
  • Hands-on experience with electromagnetic transient EMT simulations.
  • Familiarity with IBR models and synchronous machine models.
  • Experience with tools such as PSCAD, Python, MATLAB, DSA tools, and PSSE.
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Develop IBR-related oscillation scenarios in an EMT simulation environment.
  • Evaluate the dynamic performance of renewable-rich systems under different operating conditions.
  • Support ISO's engineers and improve oscillation management practices.
  • Document results and recommendations to help reduce the risk of power outages and renewable curtailments.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts and gain exposure to real-world reliability challenges in the clean energy transition period.
