Job TitleStudent Fitness Instructor (Recs- Outdoor Adventures) Agency Texas A&M International University Department Recreational Sports Proposed Minimum SalaryCommensurate Job LocationLaredo, Texas Job TypeStudent Worker Job Description Job Summary The Student Instructor Outdoor Adventures Activity Guide is responsible for assisting Recreational Sports Fitness staff with providing a safe, healthy, and positive environment for Outdoor Adventures participants. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Coach large groups of people and lead instructional events and give effective feedback to participants. Teach educational classes and in-the-field programs for Rec Sports members to include delivery of class content, customer service during the outing, and the safety of all the participants Support Rec Sports operations by assisting in day-to-day functions such as taking inventory, cleaning storage, and maintaining equipment. Plan and lead Bike along sessions in various environments and weather conditions. Responsible for assisting Recreational Sports Staff with providing a safe, healthy, and positive environment for Outdoor Adventures participants. Implement procedures for Outdoor Adventures programming, which includes but not limited to, emergency protocols. Assist the Program Manager of Strength & Fitness of Rec Sports activities. Mentor and guide new instructors to ensure existing guidelines and procedures are being communicated. Perform other related duties as assigned. Minimum Requirements Enrolled at least half-time, 6 credit hours per semester for undergraduate and 3 credit hours per semester for graduates. Maintain a TAMIU overall GPA of 2.0 for undergraduate students and 3.0 for graduate students. Must meet all other requirements as stated in TAMIU’s Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy (SAPP). Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of: Skills to align the use of various outdoor equipment. Demonstrated outdoor leadership skills to include excellent teaching and presentation abilities, and planning and organizational skills. Regional knowledge of local outdoor venues and resources is highly desirable Excellent customer service skills. Implementation of University policies KWRC Fitness guidelines and procedures to ensure a safe, positive, and enjoyable environment for fitness class participation. Ability to: Ensure participants are executing proper biking technique and encouraging safety. Plan and conduct classes independently. Recruit and retain fitness class participants. Communicate effectively with a population and provide modifications for various fitness levels. Maintain a positive work including punctuality, professional dress, behavior, and attitude. Assist and mentor fitness staff. Registrations, Certifications, and Licenses Must obtain CPR/AED certification within 60 days of employment. Must obtain First Aid certification within 60 days of employment. Other Requirements Position requires the ability to ride a bike on various surfaces including rough terrain. Position may require moving and lifting objects and materials as necessary. Position may also require various exercise movements including jumping, squatting, lifting weight equipment, etc. Position requires on campus, face-to-face interactions. Position requires maintaining a regular schedule of attendance on campus and in the workplace. Work schedules are created by the department based on departmental needs but ensure it does not conflict with class schedule. Promptly complete all required training. Submit time sheet biweekly. Some evening and weekend work may be required. Pay of Rate: $9.00/hour for up to 19 hours weekly All positions are security-sensitive. Graduate Students: · Graduate students must be enrolled in at least 3 credit hours per semester. · International graduate students must enroll in 9 semester credit hours in order to meet the federal immigration guidelines. · Must maintain a 3.0 TAMIU overall GPA. Students who will be graduating may enroll for less than half time for their final semester. Must submit proof of graduation.
