U. S. Steel is seeking a Mechanical / Manufacturing Intern for our U. S. Steel Research and Technology Center, Finish Product Innovation Engineering Division in Hoover, AL. This position will work with our Finish Product Innovation Engineering team in Innovation Projects focusing on developing new manufacturing processes with new to the world technologies creating a new business opportunity and entry into new markets. This position will: Contribute to the setup of a new manufacturing facility, supporting all phases from concept validation through process implementation and full-scale production. Collaborate as a core member of the manufacturing team to develop and optimize processes, including: Create Manufacturing Processes Flow Creating standard operating procedures (SOPs) Help to train labor Defining and implementing quality checkpoints Establishing manufacturing lines Supporting fixture development Documenting key learnings Driving continuous process improvements Engage in hands-on problem solving to identify and resolve operational challenges. Support factory cycle time and takt time deliverables Maintain daily communication with cross-functional teams, internal business units, and external partners to ensure alignment and progress.

  • Candidates must maintain a 3.0 or higher overall GPA
  • Candidates must be a full-time student pursuing a Bachelor's Degree or Master's Degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Electrical, or any Manufacturing related field.
  • Candidates must, at a minimum, have completed or be working towards completion of their sophomore year and be in good academic standing.
  • A willingness to learn about manufacturing principles, 5S, Continuous improvement and Lean Manufacturing.
  • Attitude to make things happen, be hands on, following safety procedures.
  • Demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and an aptitude for your area of study.
  • A strong record of team, project and/or people leadership in a work setting and/or extracurricular activities.
  • A willingness to take initiative to understand the business.
  • An aptitude for problem solving; strong writing and verbal communication skills.
