About The Position

The Student Assistant will support the Civil Engineering and Construction department on the Statesboro Campus beginning Fall 2025. The Teaching Assistant (TA) for TCM 3330 works under the supervision of the instructor, Cayla Anderson Thomas, to support the learning objectives of the Quantity Estimating course. The primary focus of this role is to assist students in understanding core concepts, applying professional standards to deliverables, and ensuring the smooth administration of course materials and assessments. Student employees cannot work more than 1300 hours in a 12-consecutive month period.

Requirements

  • Must be enrolled in six or more undergraduate credit hours or three or more graduate credit hours at Georgia Southern University.
  • Consistently exhibit engaging customer service
  • Ability to support various constituencies served by the University
  • Proven proficiency with computers including Microsoft Office, Google, and/or applications as required for specific position
  • Adhere to University policies and procedures to meet Institutional goals and support University's mission for student success
  • Effective communication (verbal and written), organizational and human relations skills

Responsibilities

  • Assists students with understanding course material, including the proper interpretation of construction documents, drawings, and specifications
  • Helps students with the proper techniques for quantity take-off of materials and associated calculations
  • Provides guidance on using spreadsheets and industry software for professional organization of quantities
  • Tutors students on the application and understanding of the CSI MasterFormat
  • Clarifies expectations for professional conduct in all assignments, ensuring correct spelling, grammar, and decimal placement
  • Assists the instructor with the logistical setup and organization of course materials on Folio and the online learning platform, MindTap
  • Monitors and tracks the timely completion and submission of homework assignments, quizzes, and the Final Project
  • Ensures student awareness of due dates announced on Folio
  • Helps facilitate collaborative group work, including the final comprehensive and collaborative project, which involves peer evaluation
  • Assists with the grading of homework assignments and possibly quizzes or parts of exams, focusing on the quality and professionalism of the submission
  • Ensures all student work is submitted individually, unless otherwise directed as group work
  • Maintains strict confidentiality and adherence to the grading criteria, which determines the final grade based on the following distribution: Quizzes (30%), Final Exam (20%), Exams (20%), Assignments (15%), and Project (15%)
