About The Position

The Student Assistant Peer Advisor for the Upward Bound Programs at Cal Poly Pomona is responsible for providing academic support and tutoring to high school students. This role involves assisting Academic Advisors in classroom instruction, facilitating group discussions, and maintaining documentation of tutoring services. The ideal candidate is organized, self-motivated, and has experience working with diverse student populations.

Requirements

• Currently enrolled undergraduate college student in good academic standing.
• Experience working with high school students in an educational or residential setting.
• Experience in tutoring various high school subjects or supervising adolescents.

Nice To Haves

• Conflict resolution/management skills.
• Bilingual (English/Spanish).
• Experience working with high school students in an educational capacity.
• Experience in tutoring multiple high school subjects, especially in English, Foreign Language, Mathematics (up to Calculus), or Science (up to Physics and AP levels).
• Knowledge of or background with TRIO programs or other educational equity programs.
• Experience with education or training in child/adolescent development, peer counseling/mentoring, or crisis intervention.

Responsibilities

• Assist Academic Advisors in conducting supplemental classroom instruction.
• Serve as group facilitators in discussions and presentations.
• Help groups and individual participants understand and learn subject matter.
• Maintain a log of all tutorial and advising services provided to participants.
• Document all subjects in which participants are tutored.
