About The Position

The Student Assistant contributes to the care and maintenance of the CFAES Wooster Campus Secrest Arboretum. The typical workday is 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Students can work up to 38 hours per week. Candidates must be able to work safely and respectfully as part of a team, but occasional independent work is also required. Work is primarily outdoors in various weather conditions. Horticultural experience (e.g., landscaping, greenhouse, nursery) is preferred but not required. The wage offered will be based on the candidate’s previous experience. Responsibilities will be moderate and less routine and will require responsibility and good judgement. May coordinate activities for other student employees. Requires providing excellent customer service, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work in a professional environment. Requires previous experience and knowledge or skill in student assistant role. Represent the department and the university with the highest degree of integrity applying OSU mission and shared values.

Responsibilities

• Routine landscape maintenance, including planting, weed control, pruning, watering new plantings and seasonal container displays, and mulching of tree rings and planting beds
• Maintenance of the arboretum nursery facility (e.g., potting, weeding, irrigation)
• Operates motorized equipment including string trimmers and backpack blowers
• Collects trash from Arboretum grounds and helps maintain a clean, attractive, safe environment for all visitors
• Other duties as assigned
• Coordinate activities for other student employees
