U.S. Facilities, Inc., a consolidated facility management/infrastructure service organization, is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented individual to join our team as a Structures Lab - Engineering Technician II. In this role, you will provide essential support to our Structures Team research scientists in building test specimens, conducting experiments, and assisting with various laboratory and field-testing activities. This position offers an excellent opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in structural materials and design for bridges and similar structural related assets. This position is a 12-month position and is renewed each year as necessary pending renewal approval with VDOT.

  • Conduct structural tests on various in-house load-testing machines according to established standards or in-house test procedures.
  • Operate fabrication equipment and tools.
  • Maintain and calibrate structural testing equipment and sensors.
  • Assist with the preparation of test specimens; Ensure adherence to quality control measures and accuracy.
  • Perform field-testing, sampling, and data collection, ensuring accurate and reliable results.
  • Compute, analyze and evaluate test results. Summarize data and results. Report findings and provide appropriate documentation to scientists.
  • Perform various operations in the field, materials laboratory and other facilities involving structural material including but not limited to metal, concrete, composites, and timber.
  • Collaborate with team members to troubleshoot and resolve any technical issues that may arise during experiments or testing procedures.
  • Adhere and endorse all safety protocols.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment.
  • Any other duties assigned by a supervisor and/or USF Senior Project Manager.
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • An associate degree or technical school certificate preferred, Bachelor's degree advantageous.
  • Experience using hand and power tools.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word and Excel.
  • Ability to learn computer software for the purposes of conducting tests.
  • Knowledge of mathematics and simple statistical calculations.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Understand instructions and work collaboratively within a team and independently.
  • Experience working with steel, concrete, or other construction materials.
  • Experience in the preparation of test specimens and familiarity with laboratory and field-testing procedures and equipment.
  • Experience in conducting measurements using sensors and/or instrumentation with accompanying data collection systems, specifically Cambell Scientific.
  • Familiarity with ACI, ASTM and/or AASHTO test specifications.
  • Prior experience in a materials laboratory or materials research setting is preferred.
