Requirements

  • Knowledge of: the American Concrete Institute Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete (ACI-318)
  • Knowledge of: the use and application of Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) policies including Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction, Structures Manual, Design Manual, and Standards Plans for Road and Bridge Construction
  • Skills in: the design of prestressed concrete, reinforced concrete and structural steel components, Proficient in the use of structural analysis software.
  • Skills in: the use and application of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) Bridge Design Specifications, LFRD Specifications for Structural Supports for Highway Signs, Luminaries, and Traffic Signals, and American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) Manual of Steel Construction.
  • Skills in: computer programming and debugging in Mathcad.
  • Skills in: the development and interpretation of information presented in FDOT contract plans.
  • Skills in: oral and written communication to explain engineering plans and calculations as well as the Department's policies and procedures.
  • Skills in: the use of personal computers including word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software; Ability to plan, organize and coordinate assignments
  • Ability to: communicate by phone, email, and through meetings, memorandums, letters and Department policy documents.
  • Ability to: to work effectively as a team member.
  • Ability to: establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Licensure/Registration/Certification Requirements: Registration as a Professional Engineer pursuant to chapter 471, Florida Statute.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates and performs special assignments involving computerized bridge analysis and modeling, calculations and review of design documentation and research in efforts to develop policies, design guidance and specifications.
  • Involved in the development of new products, construction methods and innovative materials to incorporate into policy and use on in-house bridge design pilot projects. Assists in performance reviews of these new technologies in construction projects to further refine the technology.
  • Works on in-house design projects, including coordinating and developing plans and design calculations. Sign and seal documents, as needed.
  • Identifies research needs related to structures. Participates in technical review committees for various research projects related to structures and innovative materials on a state and national level.
  • Assists in development of revisions/updates/additions to the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Manuals and other specifications and policies.
  • Performs training as needed.
