About The Position

The Structured Reinsurance Underwriter leads the reinsurance underwriting business of the company. This role is responsible for managing the underwriting of reinsurance for captive reinsurers in connection with structured risk solutions for corporate and institutional clients and for the development and oversight of structured reinsurance opportunities supporting professional insurers and reinsurers. This leadership position is responsible for ensuring profitable and sustainable growth for carrier markets. In addition to collaboratively supporting the company’s structured insurance business, this senior-level staff position works collaboratively with (re)insurer-clients and brokers to provide bespoke, structured reinsurance solutions to client-insurers while building a profitable portfolio of assumed risk for represented reinsurers. Requirements

  • Minimum 10 years of property & casualty underwriting experience, with significant exposure to complex/structured solutions.
  • Working knowledge of structured insurance and reinsurance.
  • Experience in or working knowledge of quantitative and financial modeling is preferred.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Risk Management, Actuarial Sciences or Business Administration is strongly recommended.
  • State P&C and/or surplus lines licenses are required.
  • CPCU, CIC, or equivalent advanced certifications are preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Support the company’s underwriting of structured risk captive reinsurance opportunities for large corporate and institutional clients.
  • Develop and implement a business strategy to underwrite bespoke structured reinsurance solutions for cedant-insurers on behalf of represented assuming-reinsurers.
  • Evaluate, select, and price complex reinsurance solutions for risks with a focus on long-term profitability and alignment with underwriting guidelines and strategic goals.
  • Actively monitor individual structured reinsurance contacts and portfolio performance.
  • Identify and source additional reinsurance company capital and negotiate terms of business with reinsurers and brokers.
  • Assure timely client risk reviews and analyses, underwriting proposals, and delivery of reinsurance documentation in connection with captive reinsurance and structured reinsurance.
  • Assure compliance with legal, regulatory and compliance requirements.
  • Conduct comprehensive risk assessments focusing on client risk, including coverage, exposure, safety features, and industry.
  • Determine appropriate reinsurance structures, including setting limits, premiums, and terms for structured reinsurance solutions.
  • Negotiate bespoke terms and conditions with brokers while identifying cross-selling opportunities.
  • Analyze, report on, and help manage risk portfolio, including reporting to stakeholders on expected business profitability.
  • Optimize available data to assist in development of strategies and pricing for different risk structures and product types and adjust underwriting strategies accordingly with senior underwriting leadership.
  • Build and maintain long-term professional relationships with business stakeholders, including clients, brokers, represented reinsurers and captive managers.
  • Represent USQRisk and affiliates at industry events and stay ahead of emerging market trends, regulatory developments.
  • Develop strategic initiatives to secure new business opportunities and assure renewals to expand the structured casualty portfolio while assuring profitability of the casualty portfolio.
  • Provide mentorship and training to underwriters, ensuring technical excellence, adherence to goals and guidelines, and effective use of systems.
  • Partner with internal teams to optimize processes, seamlessly integrating new risk solution concepts and technologies, and aligning departmental goals with global business objectives.
  • Set premium forecasts and budgets, assist in management performance reporting.
