About The Position

Prior confirmed State of Colorado state service in the structural trades class series may entitle candidates to a higher hourly wage. Physical Plant Services (PPS) supports the educational and public service programs of Fort Lewis College through the delivery of effective operational support, maintenance services and the management of the College’s facilities construction program The services are coordinated through the Service Center and are accomplished by Custodial Services, Electrical Systems and Electronic Equipment Maintenance, Grounds and Equipment Maintenance, Mechanical Systems Maintenance and Structural Maintenance work units. The Project Management work unit plans projects and provides design and construction management services to support the facilities improvement and construction program. The Structural Maintenance work unit exists to maintain, repair and improve College facilities; provide support for college events; and activities; provide a safe and functional campus. Individual Structural Trades work unit staff members are skilled in the carpentry, general maintenance, roofing, painting, and locksmithing areas. The primary goal of the Structural Maintenance work unit is to provide services and facilities that create the best possible environment for teaching and learning at Fort Lewis College.

Requirements

  • Four (4) years of relevant experience in structural trades related to the work assigned to this position OR Education and Experience: A combination of related education, formalized apprenticeship program, and/or relevant experience in structural trades related to the work assigned equal to four (4) years.

Responsibilities

  • Makes repairs to campus facilities, fixtures and furnishings including campus residence halls during the summer rotational maintenance program.
  • Repairs and replaces windows and screens including glazing, operators, window hardware and complete window assemblies.
  • Repairs and replaces metal, glass and wood doors, door hardware, door closures, locks, emergency exit devices and door assemblies.
  • Fits and hangs doors including mortise work for hinges and locks.
  • Repairs furniture, including installation of drawer slides, caster and glide replacement, chair and seating repairs, wardrobe door and drawer repair and other cabinet repairs.
  • Repairs and installs drapes, curtain and both horizontal and vertical blinds, including restringing, re-anchoring rods and replacing glides.
  • Installs and repairs towel bars, soap dispensers, bike racks and other related items.
  • Designs and fabricates from raw materials repair parts that are no longer available from vendors to make repairs to student residence halls, apartments and other campus facilities.
  • Welds using acetylene gas and electric welders to make necessary repairs to various metal equipment, apparatus and related parts.
  • Repairs, constructs, remodels and erects interior and exterior metal and wood frame wall systems, specialized movable wall systems and partitions including bathroom privacy partition systems.
  • Make repairs to roof systems; investigates leaks to determine the source of leak and makes emergency repairs as necessary.
  • Assists in the installation and replacement of roofing systems.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints and specifications for new and old construction.
  • Performs layout from blueprints, plans and sketches.
  • Hangs and finishes sheetrock, paneling and other wall systems.
  • Prepares and paints interior and exterior of buildings.
  • Repairs and installs various floor coverings including installation of carpet, tile, VCT, etc.
  • Installs and repairs ceiling systems including suspending ceiling.
  • Fabricates and installs wood and metal stairs.
  • Performs minor concrete work; lays out, constructs and sets concrete forms for flat work walls, steps and other structures.
  • Lays concrete block, including tooling joints, grouting, setting anchor bolts.
  • Repairs masonry and rock structures inside and outside.
  • Constructs various furnishings including desks, cabinets, shelving unites, storage units, etc. from sketches, drawing and verbal descriptions.
  • Prepares, paints and finishes fabricated units.
  • Constructs, installs and repairs various plastic, laminate and wood products. (Tabletops, counter tops, etc.)
  • Utilizes the Physical Plant computerized work order system, (TMA), for all work that is requested or completed.
  • Required to check the TMA scheduler for new work orders throughout the day.
  • Any unassigned work orders in the areas of responsibility are prioritized and assigned by them accordingly.
  • Responsibilities include tracking all labor and materials and entering that work order (results section), so customers can access this information and determine the status of their work request.
  • Assists in accurately recording or correcting information pertaining to tagged equipment or building areas.
  • Required to remain proficient with the work order system and obtain training or guidance that is available.
  • Ensures that any information entered in the work order system is up-to-date and correct, so when reports are generated from that data, it represents the best information available.
  • Other duties as assigned and may include painting, snow removal, clean-up, moving, helping with special set ups for events and assisting other personnel as needed.
  • Employees must review and comprehend relevant employee handbooks and policies along with completing required training, including workplace safety, compliance, emergency procedures, and job-specific skills.
