Structural Mechanics Engineer

Babcock & WilcoxAkron, OH

About The Position

The Engineer 1 for the Structural Mechanics group acquires knowledge of engineering principles and practices specific to stress analysis and structural analysis in the design of boiler, environmental, and auxiliary equipment while working on projects of varying size. This position requires an engineer to utilize their basic knowledge of engineering as they perform routine technical work not requiring previous experience. This position requires and engineer to apply prescribed techniques and procedures in accordance with established criteria to perform all necessary calculations to ensure safe and efficient designs. Each task will aid the Engineer 1 in acquiring an understanding of professional and ethical responsibilities. Acquire general knowledge of all B&W product lines and applicable design codes and standards. Collect data and gathers information to support others on projects. Perform stress/structural design calculations for B&W equipment, including new build and retrofitting of existing equipment under the guidance of a senior level engineer. Calculate loads (dead, live, seismic, wind, pressure, thermal, static, transient, etc.), load distribution, and support/anchor locations for equipment under the guidance of a senior level engineer. Design structural components related to boiler pressure parts and non-pressure parts, environmental equipment, and piping in accordance with applicable codes and standards under the guidance of a senior level engineer. Use traditional hand calculations, commercially available design software including finite element analysis software, and internally developed programs for design work. Prepare project sketches, calculations, and reports to be used by the project team. Participate in engineering of routine OEM and service contracts. Minimal participation in OEM and service proposals. Interact with others within the same discipline Perform all other duties as assigned.
