The Journeyman Ironworker is responsible for ensuring that all craft personnel are trained to adhere to project policies and procedures. This role involves setting up hoisting equipment for the raising and placement of structural-steel members, with the crane and rigging department typically handling crane setups for steel erection. The position requires the use of tag lines on all hoisted members and a thorough understanding of how members are fastened. The Journeyman Ironworker must be capable of installing steel members into approximate positions while they are supported by hoisting devices and must have the expertise to install members into their final positions using various tools such as turnbuckles, sleaver bars, porta powers, and hand tools. Additionally, the role involves aligning holes in members with corresponding holes in previously placed members and verifying the vertical and horizontal alignment of members using tools like Bazooka bobs, lasers, and levels. The Journeyman Ironworker must also be knowledgeable about bolting members to maintain their position until they can be permanently secured and must have the ability to modify steel members as needed. Proper procedures for loading, transporting, and unloading materials, tools, and equipment are also essential, along with assisting in the lifting, positioning, and securing of materials during installation. Minor maintenance and cleaning of tools and equipment are also part of the job responsibilities.
