About The Position

The Journeyman Ironworker is responsible for ensuring that all craft are trained to follow project policies and procedures. This role involves setting up hoisting equipment for raising and placing structural-steel members, with the crane and rigging department typically handling crane setups for steel erection. The position requires the use of tag lines on all hoisted members and a thorough understanding of how members are fastened. The Journeyman Ironworker must be able to install steel members into approximate positions while supported by hoisting devices and ensure they are installed into final positions using various tools and equipment. Additionally, the role includes aligning holes in members, verifying vertical and horizontal alignment, bolting members temporarily, modifying steel members, and assisting in the handling of materials during installation. Minor maintenance and cleaning of tools and equipment are also part of the job responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 48 months industrial construction experience.
  • Knowledge of hoisting equipment and procedures.
  • Ability to use various tools and equipment for steel installation.
  • Understanding of structural steel alignment and fastening techniques.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure all craft are trained to follow project policies and procedures.
  • Set up hoisting equipment for raising and placing structural-steel members.
  • Use tag lines on all members that are hoisted.
  • Understand how members are fastened.
  • Install steel members into approximate position while supported by hoisting devices.
  • Install members into final position using turnbuckles, sleaver bars, porta powers, and hand tools.
  • Align holes in members with corresponding holes in previously placed members using drift pins, bull pins, spud wrenches, and sleaver bars.
  • Verify vertical and horizontal alignment of members using Bazooka bobs, lasers, and levels.
  • Bolt members to keep them in position until they can be permanently bolted or welded.
  • Modify steel members using oxyacetylene welding equipment or grinders with metal cutting discs.
  • Follow proper procedures for loading, transporting, or unloading materials, tools, equipment, and supplies.
  • Assist in lifting, positioning, and securing materials and structural members during installation.
  • Perform minor maintenance or cleaning activities of tools and equipment.
