The Structural Designer II is a mid‑level technical contributor responsible for producing accurate 3D models, drawings, and material take‑offs for heavy industrial equipment and hot exhaust ducting systems. This role is intended for a developing industrial designer who has moved beyond entry‑level drafting and is building depth in large‑scale, high‑temperature ducting and structural platework under the guidance of senior designers and engineers. This position supports the design of hot exhaust and flue gas ducting systems associated with pollution control equipment located downstream of combustion turbines, boilers, and fired heaters, with increasing responsibility for design execution, coordination, and quality. This job description represents only the primary areas of responsibility; specific position assignments will vary depending on the needs of the department. To perform the job successfully, an individual must be able to execute each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in Computer‑Aided Design, Drafting, Engineering Technology, or a related discipline.
  • Three (3) to five (5) years of experience in industrial structural or mechanical design.
  • Experience producing industrial ductwork or plate structures, preferably in heavy industrial or process‑equipment environments.
  • Proficiency in 3D modeling and preparation of fabrication‑ready drawings.
  • Ability to perform basic geometric and material quantity calculations accurately.
  • Valid driver’s license required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Autodesk® Inventor or similar 3D mechanical design software.
  • Exposure to hot exhaust or flue gas ducting systems operating at elevated temperatures.
  • Familiarity with pollution control equipment such as SCRs, baghouses, or ESPs.
  • Basic understanding of thermal expansion concepts in large ducting or plate structures.
  • Knowledge of common industrial welding practices and fabrication constraints.
  • Ability to interpret P&IDs and coordinate ducting layouts with process requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare 3D CAD models, fabrication drawings, and material take‑offs for heavy industrial equipment and ducting systems.
  • Assist in the design of hot exhaust and flue gas ducting, including casings, transitions, and associated structural plate components.
  • Develop drawings for customer review, material procurement, and fabrication, following established design standards and templates.
  • Incorporate design input related to thermal expansion, operating temperature, and mechanical loading as directed by senior designers or engineers.
  • Coordinate ducting layouts and interfaces with associated equipment such as SCR reactors, baghouses, ESPs, dampers, and expansion joints, with guidance as needed.
  • Review project inputs for completeness and raise questions or discrepancies to senior designers or project engineers.
  • Perform geometric and material calculations (lengths, areas, volumes, weights, angles) to support drawing accuracy and material lists.
  • Revise drawings based on internal reviews, customer comments, and fabrication feedback.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary coordination with Engineering, Project Management, and Sales to support project execution.
  • Follow document control procedures for drawing issuance, revisions, and file management.
