About The Position

Dewberry has an opportunity for an experienced transportation leader to serve as a Structural (Bridge) Principal Engineer/Team Lead within our transportation engineering business unit in Richmond, Virginia. This opportunity offers flexible work hours and the ability for part-time telework. This individual will serve as a leader in our growing transportation design team in Richmond, and will coordinate with transportation leadership staff throughout Virginia. The selected person will be responsible for oversight of staff, conducting business development activities, and serve as a Project Manager/Design Manager on design-build, project specific, and on-call contacts. Typical projects involve private, locality, and state agency clients in the transportation market. The selected candidate will be involved in staff professional development, growth, retention and recruiting, hiring, mentoring, training, quality management, and project management practices. The selected person will also be responsible for leading and mentoring design teams that perform structural calculations, preparing design and contract documents (including reports, engineer’s estimates, and construction specifications), reviewing shop drawings, and providing technical support during construction. Projects include design and design-build projects that encompass new and replacement bridges, bridge widenings, bridge rehabilitation, and other transportation related structures. Typical clients include local, state, and federal agencies as well as private owners in the transportation market. Requirements

  • BS in Civil Engineering with 15+ years of bridge engineering and project management in the transportation market.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) in VA required. Structural Engineer (SE) desired.
  • Ability to obtain Professional Engineer licenses in other states as needed.
  • Experience as a Project Manager/Task Manager with VDOT and other transportation clients.
  • Strong people skills, oral/written communications skills, and effective leadership skills.
  • Local travel and a clean driving record are required.

Nice To Haves

  • MS Degree in Structural Engineering preferred.
  • Desing-build and VDOT Statewide Structure and Bridge contract experience is a plus.
  • Rail bridge design and highway bridge rehabilitation experience are desirable.
  • Experience writing successful technical proposals and leading successful client interviews.

Responsibilities

  • Market Dewberry’s capabilities to clients surrounding the greater Richmond area.
  • Conduct business development activities, proposal writing, and oversight.
  • Supervise and provide direction and guidance to design staff in Richmond.
  • Perform as Project Manager/Design Manager/Task Manager.
  • Recruit, develop, mentor and train individual practitioners and teams and participate in personnel actions, hiring, and performance reviews.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with offices across the mid-Atlantic region.
  • Coordinate with clients, subconsultants, and design-build contractors.
  • Lead structural engineering staff during pursuit and delivery of transportation projects.
  • Plan, schedule, and coordinate staff/team to prepare engineering documents and activities for multiple structural projects.
