About The Position

Performs introductory skilled trades work in the construction, maintenance and repair of streets, sidewalks, driveways, drainage ways and related facilities; operates a variety of motorized equipment; and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the close supervision of the Streets Maintenance Supervisor. This position is designated as essential during emergency or disaster situations, as assigned. Essential Job Functions Level I Repairs and maintains streets: prepares asphalt materials for resurfacing and patching potholes; builds and sets concrete forms; pours and patches new and old concreate work; performs general landscaping duties upon completion of projects. Removes damaged sections of asphalt; fills holes with patching materials and hot asphalt using tamps or rolls patches. Constructs, maintains, and repairs street signs, catch basins, storm drainpipes, curbs, sidewalks, street striping, retaining walls, and other infrastructure within Town right of way and maintenance easements. Performs minor repair and preventative maintenance on vehicles and motorized equipment; performs oil changes, replaces filters and spark plugs, and checks tire pressure and fluids. Assists with the installation and removal of traffic control devices for operation and maintenance activities. Operates backhoe, front end loader, chainsaw, concrete saw, jackhammer, asphalt roller, weed eater, stump grinder, and other equipment in the construction, maintenance, and repair of Public Works streets and facilities. Promotes and demonstrates organizational culture, core values, and leadership philosophies consistent with, or complementary to, Town administration. Adheres to policies and procedures established by the Town. Performs work during emergency or disaster situations as necessary, upon request, or as assigned by the Town Manager. Level II - In addition to job functions listed above Prepares asphalt materials for resurfacing and patching. Performs operation and maintenance activities on Town owned and maintained stormwater control measures. Operates dump trucks, backhoe, front end loader, chainsaw, concrete saw, jackhammer, asphalt roller, striping machine, weed eater, stump grinder, and other equipment in the construction, maintenance, and repair of public works facilities.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED with minimal experience (less than 1 year) in general construction, street maintenance, and in the operation of medium to heavy sized equipment and trucks.
  • Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina.
  • Obtain Flagger certification within one (1) year of appointment.
  • Obtain Confined Space certification within one (1) year of appointment.
  • Obtain FEMA Class 100 and 700 certifications within one (1) year of appointment.
  • High school diploma or GED with moderate experience (one to three years) in general construction, street maintenance.
  • Proficient in the operation of heavy equipment including mini excavator, combination backhoe, and trucks, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Possession of Confined Space certification.
  • Possession of Flagger certification.
  • Possess or obtain FEMA Class 100 and 700 certifications within 6 months of appointment to the position.
  • Possession of OSHA 30 certification within 1 year of appointment to the position.
  • Possess or obtain a Class A CDL driver’s license issued by the State of North Carolina within 1 year of appointment to the position.
  • Possess or obtain a Public Operator Pesticide License issued by the State of North Carolina within 2 years of appointment to the position.
