About The Position

The Outreach Worker plays a vital role in engaging with runaway, homeless, and at-risk youth throughout Dutchess County. This position is responsible for conducting street outreach, school-based engagement, event tabling, and community networking to identify and connect with at least 1,500 youth annually. The Outreach Worker will conduct initial screenings, provide crisis support, and link youth to shelter and supportive services as needed.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 21 years of age and have a high school diploma or equivalent, with prior youth work experience preferred.
  • Must demonstrate interest and have the capacity to effectively work with runaway, homeless, and at-risk youth and their families.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • A valid driver's license is required.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts regular street outreach throughout Dutchess County, including high-traffic areas and locations where youth are known to congregate.
  • Builds relationships with schools, youth organizations, and community partners to identify youth in need and coordinate services.
  • Represents the program at community events, health fairs, and tabling opportunities to promote services and raise awareness.
  • Provides immediate crisis intervention and de-escalation as needed.
  • Screens youth for housing and services, conducts brief intakes, and makes appropriate referrals to case managers or shelter services.
  • Transports or arranges transportation for youth to shelter or other needed services.
  • Documents all outreach efforts, contacts, and referrals in accordance with agency procedures and funding requirements.
  • Supports the planning and implementation of youth development and engagement activities in the community, including the ongoing development of the Youth Action Board.
  • Participates in team meetings, required trainings, and collaborative outreach efforts.
  • Works flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, to effectively reach youth where and when they are most accessible.
