About The Position

Operates a variety of heavy equipment and/or trucks utilized in construction, maintenance, and repair activities; performs a variety of semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance of street, bridge, water, wastewater, gas, and storm drainage systems; performs related work as assigned.

A High School Diploma or GED is required.
Minimum 3 years of experience required, which involves the use of medium and heavy equipment, some of which must be related to road repair or maintenance, utility work, etc.
Valid Tennessee Class B CDL and a clear driving record are required. Some departments may require specific CDL endorsements. If a candidate does not have a valid Tennessee driver's license, they must acquire one within 30 days of hire.
An equivalent combination of relevant experience and demonstrated proficiency in operating heavy construction equipment may be considered in lieu of possessing a CDL at the time of hire. Candidates may be required to perform a pre-employment skills test. Upon hire, incumbent must obtain a Tennessee CDL permit within 60 days of hire and a valid Tennessee Class B CDL within six (6) months of hire. CDL training is available and will be discussed during the interview process.
Due to the on-call nature of this position, the ideal candidate should reside in Wilson County or within a 45-minute drive of the Public Works (410 Park Dr, Lebanon, TN 37087).
The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds and up to 100 pounds with assistance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
The incumbent will be required to maintain bodily injury/liability insurance at 100/300 and provide proof of insurance upon hire.

Responsibilities

Operates vehicles of various sizes and weights, usually more than three tons, in the loading, hauling, and unloading of various equipment, materials, and supplies.
Operates trucks and construction or power equipment, such as a pan, back-hoe, grader, paving vehicle, front-end loader, boom truck, dump truck, low-boy truck, snowplow, trencher, etc.
Works with and assists the crew in digging ditches, laying lines or pipe, repairing bridges, hoisting material, tools, equipment, and related work with a backhoe or front-end loader; may use a variety of hand tools.
Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor; cleans equipment.
Performs all duties in conformance with appropriate safety and security standards.
May perform some or all the duties of Light Equipment Operator or Utility Workers, as required or assigned.
May be assigned to street sweeper (night shift).
Other duties as assigned.
May be required to work a staggered shift, depending on weather conditions, if department needs require.
Reliable attendance and punctuality are essential functions of this role.
May be required to work “on-call” duty as assigned by the Director of Public Works or another authorized Supervisor.
Rotation on call weakly with other equipment operators
Controls traffic at work sites by flagging to guide traffic through work areas, as required or assigned.
