About The Position

The Strategic Purchasing Manager is responsible for securing reliable, high-quality materials and services at the best value while ensuring that the organizations supply chain supports production efficiency and customer satisfaction.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain, Business Management, Engineering or related field.
  • Five or more years of purchasing experience, preferably in metal fabrication, machining or industrial manufacturing.
  • Strong understanding of raw materials, machining processes, plating, powder coating, anodizing, and finishing services.
  • Strong negotiation skills and experience managing supplier performance and cost-saving initiatives.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work closely with cross-functional teams.
  • Proficiency with ERP systems (e.g., Epicor) and Microsoft Excel.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of production scheduling processes.
  • Understanding of manufacturing workflows, tolerances, and material certifications (e.g., DFARS, RoHS, REACH).
  • Experience sourcing both domestically and internationally.
  • Familiarity with lean manufacturing principles and supply chain optimization.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute strategic sourcing plans specific to the metal fabrication and finishing industry.
  • Source and manage supplier relationships for key materials such as steel, aluminum, stainless steel, fasteners, coatings, and finishing chemicals.
  • Negotiate pricing, lead times, and contracts with suppliers, ensuring the best quality-to-cost ratio and continuity of supply.
  • Evaluate vendors on cost, quality, delivery, and service; implement continuous improvement initiatives across the supply base.
  • Stay up-to-date on market trends, raw material cost fluctuations, and industry innovations to inform purchasing decisions.
  • Coordinate with Engineering, Production, and Quality teams to understand material specifications, product requirements, and manufacturing timelines.
  • Lead make-vs-buy analyses and assess outsourcing opportunities for fabrication and finishing services.
  • Maintain accurate records of purchasing activities, supplier qualifications, and contract performance.
  • Use ERP systems to manage procurement processes, track inventory levels, and forecast demand.
