About The Position

The Stranding Technician at the University of California, Santa Cruz, plays a crucial role in the Long Marine Lab Stranding Program, which is dedicated to responding to marine mammal strandings in Santa Cruz County. Under the guidance of the Principal Researcher, Dr. Robin Dunkin, and co-investigators, the technician will assist with various activities related to the care and management of stranded marine mammals. This position is seasonal and part-time, with work hours fluctuating based on the number of strandings, typically increasing during the summer months and decreasing in winter. The technician will be involved in data management, stranding response, data collection and analysis, and volunteer supervision, contributing to the understanding of marine mammal health and ocean health through data collected for NOAA and other researchers. The technician will be responsible for entering data into local and national databases, responding to strandings, assisting with necropsies, and ensuring proper maintenance of the necropsy lab. Additionally, the role includes participating in beach surveys and training new volunteers. The position requires a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion principles, and the selected candidate must be prepared to work in various environmental conditions, including inclement weather and rugged terrains. The technician will also need to adhere to safety protocols and complete necessary training as part of their employment.
