More About the Role: Mecklenburg County Storm Water Operations conducts a wide variety of maintenance, construction, landscaping, and repair activities throughout the County with a focus on storm water conveyance systems and floodplains. The Storm Water Technician Series engages in maintenance, construction, landscaping, and repair activities requiring the use of hand tools, powered tools, and medium to heavy equipment (tractors, skid steers, excavators, dump trucks); chemical and physical vegetation management; structural demolition projects; removal of debris blocking stream channels, stream stabilization projects; routine equipment maintenance and repair; tree assessment and removal; and a variety of similar activities. This position works alongside a diverse team of Storm Water Technicians and Supervisors with varying skill levels, years of experience, and certifications which may include CDLs and pesticide application licenses. Position Summary Performs general to specialized maintenance, construction, and landscaping activities to improve the effectiveness of storm water drainage systems and floodplain buyout properties at numerous locations throughout Mecklenburg County. This position, under direct supervision, is primarily responsible for performing manual labor, semi-skilled work, and skilled technical work within the environmental division. Position will operate various landscaping and construction equipment such as chainsaws, weedeaters, skid-steer loaders, tractors, ATVs, backhoes, dozers, excavators and may operate CDL required heavy trucks depending on area of assignment.

Requirements

  • Minimum of four years of directly related experience
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Yes
  • Requires a valid North Carolina or South Carolina drivers license
  • Requires a County driving permit
  • Depending on the area of assignment, may require a Class A CDL with one or more of the following endorsements, H(Hazardous Materials), N(Tank Vehicle), P (Passenger Transport), S (School Bus/Passenger Transport), T (Double/Triples), or X (Tanker and hazardous Materials).
  • Depending upon area of assignment, may require a NC Pesticide Applicator License

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of trade methods and practices associated with storm water conveyances, natural streams, landscaping, construction and demolition
  • Working knowledge of safety regulations and practices
  • Depending on area of assignment, a Class A CDL and NC Pesticide Applicators license
  • Ability to safely and effectively operate medium to heavy equipment including tractors, skidsteers, tandem axle dump trucks, excavators and dozers.

Responsibilities

  • Operate medium to large heavy equipment associated with the demolition of structures, stream channel work and landscaping
  • Perform routine maintenance and related care of equipment used in daily activities
  • Prepare daily inspection reports, pre-trip inspections, logs, and operating records for equipment and infrastructure
  • Assist with cleaning and maintenance of vehicles, equipment, and tools
  • Perform general landscaping and property maintenance including debris removal, invasive plant treatment, and hazardous tree removal
  • Assist in the removal of blockages and debris within stream channels while wearing waders
  • Engage in safe working practices and complies with safety programs and guidelines
  • May provide direction to temporary labor engaged in various storm water activities
  • Monitor the safety of co-workers
  • Operate storm water vehicles that require a Class A CDL
  • Perform work assignments as required in all weather
