About The Position

Under general supervision, maintains and makes repairs to storm sewers or sanitary sewer system; performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.
  • Equivalent of a High School Diploma
  • Possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Or ability to obtain within 6 months
  • Knowledge of flow patterns, controls and the operation of all equipment in working with the sanitary sewers and drainage systems.
  • Knowledge of the function of basic hand and power tools.
  • Knowledge of basic problem solving techniques.
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations and safe work practices.
  • Knowledge of sewer and drainage maps for the city.
  • Ability to ensure safe work environment.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work in inclement weather conditions.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with those contacted throughout the course of the workday.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other departments, agencies, employees, supervisors and the public.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects, maintains, cleans and makes repairs to storm sewers or sanitary sewer system, including doing carpenter work; bricklaying and cement finishing; flushing sewers; installing, cleaning and repairing manholes; constructing and repairing catch basins and sidewalls; laying and replacing short runs of sewer lines; installing, cleaning and repairing flapper gates.
  • Answers emergency call to un-stop sewers for repair work on sanitary sewer lines or storm sewers.
  • Cleans, maintains, services and performs minor repairs and assists mechanic in making repairs to the particular piece of city equipment assigned.
  • Performs "Confined Space" duties.
  • Utilizes and wears proper protective safety gear and equipment.
  • Performs work zone safety procedures.
  • Operates various power and hand tools while performing sewer maintenance, including shovels, saws, etc.
  • Maintains levee and performs repairs or other maintenance, such as mowing and vegetation removal.
  • Operates and maintains pumps and gates for flood control.
  • Operates snowplow and salt trucks, loads and hauls various types of materials.
  • Locates underground utilities.
