About The Position

The Store Manager in Training (SMIT) is a developmental role designed to prepare individuals for promotion to Store Manager. The SMIT works closely with the Store Manager and leadership team to learn all aspects of daily store operations, team leadership, customer service, merchandising, and performance management. This position combines hands on experience, structured training, and ongoing coaching to build the skills needed to successfully lead a store.

Requirements

  • Physical abilities: May be required to lift up to 80-85lbs.; standing, bending, lifting and twisting for up to 90% of your shift; frequently lifting product from various heights including floor level to over your head; Ability to stand or walk at least 10 hours daily; working in various temperature controlled environments; walking on a variety of flooring such as concrete, tile, carpet etc.
  • Strong communication Skills: Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with peers and leaders on a daily basis
  • Organizational Skills: Ability to fulfill customer orders in a timely manner; ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Working in a team-based environment: Working independently and as a team player to ensure our customers are receiving orders timely and with the highest quality.
  • Quality: Maintain integrity and high standards of product handling from all perspectives
  • Safety Culture: Maintain and drive safety policies; driving for accountability of safe practices throughout shift

Responsibilities

  • Learn daily grocery store operations, including opening and closing duties.
  • Support all departments: Produce, Meat, Seafood, Deli/Bakery, Grocery, Dairy, Frozen, Front-End, and more.
  • Ensure proper product rotation (FIFO), freshness standards, and waste reduction.
  • Oversee stocking, ordering, and inventory control, including shrink management.
  • Maintain store cleanliness, sanitation, and safety standards.
  • Ensure compliance with all food safety guidelines (HACCP, temperature logs, labeling, etc.).
  • Deliver exceptional customer service and ensure associates follow service standards.
  • Resolve customer questions, product issues, or concerns promptly and professionally.
  • Promote a welcoming and helpful shopping experience throughout the store.
  • Assist with hiring, training, and developing store associates.
  • Participate in creating employee schedules and managing labor hours.
  • Provide coaching, feedback, and daily directions to department teams.
  • Promote a team-oriented, positive work environment.
  • Learn to execute weekly ad sets, seasonal displays, and planograms.
  • Support promotional events and product launches.
  • Maintain shelves, endcaps, and displays to company standards.
  • Monitor sales trends and help drive store profitability.
  • Learn to analyze daily/weekly sales reports, labor usage, and inventory data.
  • Assist in meeting sales goals, margin targets, and expense controls.
  • Understand loss prevention processes and security procedures.
  • Maintain strict adherence to health department regulations and food handling policies.
  • Ensure store-wide compliance with company policies and labor laws.
