About The Position

The Department of Surgery has an opening for a full-time Faculty position (unclassified) Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant. The Division of GI, Trauma and Endocrine Surgery in the Department of Surgery (GITES) at the University of Colorado, School of Medicine, has a full-time faculty position available at the rank of Instructor for an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA). Under the direction of the full-time faculty or designee, this position provides inpatient medical care services at the University of Colorado Hospital (UCH). The candidate will be expected to provide independent clinical services for our Surgical Trauma Intensive Care Unit (STICU). This description is a summary only, describing the general level of work being performed. It is not intended to be all-inclusive. Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with a Masters degree in Acute Care Nursing and/or a graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program.
  • Current Colorado license to practice as an Advanced Practice Nurse and/or Physician Assistant with prescriptive privileges.
  • Meets and maintains specific requirements of the Nursing Credential Review Board (Nurse Practitioner) and the Medical Review Board (Physician Assistant).
  • Completion of a post-graduate APP fellowship or minimum of 1 year of relevant clinical experience
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Collaborative approach to patient management
  • Assessing patients, creating, documenting, and enacting a plan of care for critically-ill trauma and surgery patients with best practices and evidence to support decision making.

Nice To Haves

  • Two years’ experience in general surgery, trauma surgery, or critical care setting preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Inpatient responsibilities such as rounding, writing orders, patient assessment, patient education, care coordination, disease management, ICU specific procedures once privileged, and discharge activities
  • Close collaboration with general surgeons, sub-specialty surgeons, emergency medicine physicians, consultants, intensivists, trainees, and hospital staff will be necessary.
  • Professional interaction with consultant teams, referring physicians and staff, emergency medical personnel and primary care providers is essential.
  • Provide care to patients primarily in the intensive care unit but may be responsible for assessing patients in inpatient wards, acute care areas, emergency department, and in the post anesthesia care units.
