This Sterilization Tech I position is supervised by the Surgical Services Unit Charge Nurses and the Director of Surgical Services. The role requires adherence to hospital and department policies, including maintaining a good attendance record, punctuality, following dress code, observing confidentiality, adhering to safety policies, participating in continuing education, and complying with all relevant policies and procedures. The individual must demonstrate flexibility and openness to change, consistently meet the hospital’s Journey to Service Excellence standards, support Customer Service, and collaborate with appropriate charge nurses regarding precepting of orientees. Departmental duties include monitoring OR supplies, working with the clinical buyer to oversee outdates and needed supplies for cases, helping establish PAR levels and organization of supplies, and coordinating with surgical techs, director, and buyer to ensure proper supplies are available. The role involves anticipating product needs by monitoring the OR schedule, pulling cases with instruments prior to surgery to assist with room turnover, and utilizing devices to retrieve supplies during surgery when necessary. The tech will also use pick sheets for proper supply pulling, assist with preference card changes and updates, work in sterile processing as needed for instrument sterilization, and take call responsibility for sterile processing. Clinical duties encompass understanding and demonstrating all sterile processing competencies, such as operating washers and sterilizers, handling biologicals and indicators, managing storage, tracing instruments, maintaining monthly records, and ensuring completeness of trays. The position also requires understanding and demonstrating sterile supply maintenance, including rotation and proper handling, understanding the process in preference cards for pulling instruments and supplies, and demonstrating proper PPE. Call responsibilities for sterile processing are also part of the clinical duties. Additional responsibilities include maintaining the unit, equipment, and supplies, communicating patient information, documenting information, charging for equipment and supplies, and efficiently using the computer system. Strong interpersonal skills, including effective communication, flexibility, adaptability, supporting unit teams, and problem resolution, are essential.
