About The Position

The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for the decontamination, inspection, assembly, and sterilization of the medical and surgical instruments. The Sterile Processing Services Technician is responsible for maintaining all sterile processing areas. The SPT is vital to ensuring the safety of patients and staff by maintaining high standards of cleanliness, sterilization, and infection control.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent required
  • 1-2 years as a Sterile Processing Services Technician preferred
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) required
  • CRCST or CBSPD preferred; As of 2023, required within 18 months of hire
  • Knowledge of sterilization techniques and infection control.
  • Strong attention to detail and follow through.
  • Knowledge of surgical instruments and medical equipment.
  • Aptitude to troubleshoot and repair sterile processing instrumentation.
  • Ability to follow protocols, prioritize tasks in a fast-paced setting.
  • Computer skills for documentation and inventory tracking.

Responsibilities

  • Decontaminate surgical instruments, trays, and equipment using approved methods and PPE.
  • Distribute surgical instruments from sterile processing areas to other areas within the facility as needed.
  • Inspect instruments for damage or wear and report any issues.
  • Test and observe instruments to ensure operating standards are met.
  • Initiate repairs as needed.
  • Assemble instrument set and trays according to standardized procedures and surgeon preferences.
  • Operate autoclaves and other sterilization equipment.
  • Ensure proper documentation of sterilization cycles.
  • Monitor, interpret, and document results of physical, chemical and biological indicators for all types of sterilizers used in the sterile processing areas.
  • Restock materials used for supporting sterile processing services.
  • Identifies sterilization failure or recall and notifies OR Manager / Director.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Must work within scope of practice.
