About The Position

The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for disassembling, cleaning, sterilizing, and storing trays, instruments, equipment, and supplies according to prescribed procedures. This role involves operating various sterilizers, performing daily Bowie Dick testing, and maintaining meticulous documentation for sterilization loads and state agencies. The technician also assembles instrument procedure trays, packs, and kits, handles equipment cleaning and reassembly, and conducts weekly inventory for disposable supplies. Maintaining a clean and organized work environment is crucial for upholding standards and ensuring safety.

Requirements

  • Certified as Surgical Technician in the State of Maryland
  • Minimum 1 year experience in acute care or ambulatory surgery setting
  • Effective communication skills

Responsibilities

  • Sterilize instruments, equipment, utensils, linens and supplies using various sterilizers. Performs Bowie Dick testing every morning, load autoclaves in the prescribed manner and set controls to specified time and temperature according to material and requirements of items being sterilized. Complete appropriate documentation records prior to sterilization, read and initial sterilizer print-outs to verify appropriate sterilization cycle and provide required records for various state agencies, maintain required documentation on sterilization loads.
  • Assemble all instrument procedure trays, packs and kits according to the prescribed manner. Wrap packages and handle all items following procedures, mark items with identifying data and distribute or store in designated areas. Notify supervisor when unable to replace parts or with equipment deficiencies.
  • Disassemble and clean equipment using approved disinfectants, detergents, soaps and cleaners, reassemble equipment after cleaning and operate to test for proper functioning, replace lost or damaged parts such as tubes, containers and connectors from stock on hand. Complete required forms for inoperable equipment.
  • Complete weekly inventory and submit requests for disposable supplies.
  • Maintain assigned work areas and equipment in a clean and organized condition to maintain required standards for handling sterilized and clean materials and to maintain a safe work environment.
