About The Position

The Sterile Processing Technician at Houston Methodist is responsible for the decontamination, assembly, inspection, wrapping, and sterilization of surgical instruments and medical equipment. This role ensures timely delivery of sterile products to Surgical Services and collaborates closely with the Operating Room staff to maintain workflow and uphold patient safety standards. The technician is expected to practice excellent customer service and contribute to a positive work environment while adhering to industry standards and institutional policies.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent education (GED or homeschool equivalency).
  • Formal education through a Sterile Processing program preferred.
  • CRCST or CSPDT certification required within 1 year of employment.
  • Demonstrated skills and competencies necessary to perform the assigned job safely.
  • Proficiency in English for effective communication.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a healthcare setting is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform decontamination and assembly of surgical trays and instruments using established count sheets.
  • Wrap or contain items appropriately based on size and type.
  • Provide timely sterile products and trays by collaborating with OR staff and following guidance from experienced surgical techs.
  • Sterilize instruments and surgical trays according to manufacturer instructions and institutional policies.
  • Organize workload and assist others to maintain consistent workflow between the OR and Sterile Processing.
  • Utilize appropriate cleaning agents and ensure quality processes are followed according to AAMI standards.
  • Manage time effectively and prioritize daily tasks, minimizing incidental overtime.
  • Participate in department projects and Shared Governance committee.
