About The Position

Aiken Regional Medical Centers, located in Aiken, South Carolina, is a 273-bed acute care facility providing top quality and safe healthcare to the residents of Aiken and surrounding communities since 1917. Additionally, Aiken Regional provides comprehensive healthcare services such as behavioral health, emergency medical care, orthopedic surgeries, maternity, rehabilitation services, imaging, and wound care. The Sterile Processing Technician performs all assigned duties related to the reprocessing of medical equipment and instrumentation, including but not limited to receiving, inspecting, cleaning, machine processing, sorting, assembly, packaging and wrapping, sterilization, process controls, storage and distribution.

Requirements

  • High school diploma at minimum.
  • Specific sterile processing techniques in an acute care hospital required.
  • Certification through IAHCSM, NICHSPDP or Purdue University Continuing Education preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform rounds to hospital soiled utility rooms to collect discontinued patient care moveable equipment and instrumentation and return to the decontamination room for processing.
  • Inspect and initiate proper cleaning techniques for soiled instruments and equipment through the decontamination room.
  • Operate specialty-cleaning equipment in the decontamination room, including ultrasonic cavitation sinks and machine processors.
  • Sort, assemble, wrap and package surgical instrumentation according to set guides and sterile processing techniques.
  • Restock code carts, specialty carts and sets and trays for use in patient care.
  • Receive deliveries of supplies from Materials Management and put stock away inside the department in a timely manner.
  • Inventory certain medical/surgical supplies in the operating room suite and package necessary supplies for sterilization.
  • Prepare biological test kits to challenge high and low heat sterilization equipment.
  • Monitor sterilizer cycles and detect improper cycle parameters, reporting immediately to senior technician and/or manager.
  • Document all process controls and data necessary for special reports and process improvements.
  • Perform daily high and low dusting to maintain cleanliness of work surfaces.
  • Restock sets onto shelving in sterile storeroom, rotating supplies and inspecting integrity of every pack, set and container.
  • Assist in reordering supplies, maintaining Set Guide Index, Care & Handling files and vendor information files.
