The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for the decontamination, cleaning, assembling, packaging, sterilization, storage, and distribution of reusable surgical instrumentation and equipment. This role ensures that all surgical materials are sterile and functioning properly, adhering to established standards and procedures.

  • Perform decontamination, cleaning, assembling, packaging, scanning, sterilization, storage, and distribution of reusable surgical instrumentation and equipment.
  • Prepare trays for designated areas according to prescribed procedures.
  • Wrap and/or package items for specified areas according to procedures prescribed for designated areas.
  • Operate bar code instrument tracking system.
  • Disassemble, clean, assemble, and test specialty instrumentation and equipment for proper functioning.
  • Differentiate between single-use and reusable items.
  • Decontaminate and sterilize instruments, medical supplies, and equipment, and assemble, wrap, and sterilize trays of instruments.
  • Monitor biological and chemical wash solution to ensure quality and consistency for decontamination of instruments and medical equipment.
  • Sort mismatched sets of instruments, trays, and medical equipment and make them available to sterile processing customers in a timely manner.
  • Restock, label, and maintain inventory; submit requisitions; collect and distribute instruments, trays, crash carts, and facility medical equipment.
  • Perform environmental maintenance duties and assist in maintaining inventory levels in sterile processing, the operating room, and in equipment storage areas.
  • Verify that equipment functions properly; requisition for equipment maintenance, repair, or replacement; and remove defective equipment.
  • Maintain a clean work area.
  • Assist with maintaining established departmental policies and procedures, objectives and quality improvement, safety, and environmental and infection control standards.
  • Communicate appropriately using good interpersonal skills.
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • State Licensure or certification as a Sterilization Technician, as required by state regulations or contract specifications.
  • At least 1 year of experience working in a fast-paced operating room.
