With 388 beds it is the second largest of Duke Health's four hospitals and offers a comprehensive range of medical, surgical, and diagnostic services, including orthopedics, weight-loss surgery, women's services, and heart and vascular services. General Description The Sterile Processing Supervisor will oversee the daily operations of the sterile processing department, ensuring compliance with infection control policies and standards set by AAMI, AORN, and the Joint Commission. This role involves direct supervision of sterile processing personnel, facilitating departmental efficiencies, and acting as a liaison between the OR and SPD to ensure timely and accurate instrumentation readiness.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree in a related field preferred.
  • Two years of sterile processing leadership experience may be substituted for the Associate's degree. This experience is separate from the requirements outlined in the Experience section.
  • Minimum of three years of experience as a Sterile Processing Technician to include either one year of previous leadership experience in a team lead/supervisory or peer leadership capacity.
  • Current certification as a Sterile Processing Technician through an accredited organization (CRCST - Certified Registered Central Service Tech, HSPA, or Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician CBSPD).

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and schedule staff to ensure smooth workflow in the department.
  • Provide daily direction, mentorship, and development opportunities for staff.
  • Ensure compliance with infection control and sterilization standards.
  • Coordinate and maintain departmental workflow in decontamination, inspection, cleaning, assembling, and packaging of surgical instruments and equipment.
  • Monitor inventory of supplies and equipment, coordinate procurement and stocking activities, and recommend optimal par levels.
  • Facilitate timely ordering of instrumentation and supplies, and identify opportunities for cost reduction and expense control.
  • Develop and implement solutions to improve quality, safety, efficiency, and productivity.
  • Provide ongoing communication with staff and ancillary departments, and participate in hospital teams to share information and problem-solve.
